Transport Award Winner: Barclays Cycle Hire, Transport for London & Serco

Nominated for Designs of the Year Transport Award 2011

Brit Insurance Product Award 2011:Barclays Cycle Hire, Transport for London & Serco

Launched on 30 July 2010, 5000 bikes and 315 docking stations opened for the public bicycle sharing scheme, Barclays Cycle Hire. Looking to other successful cities schemes, London Mayor Boris Johnson stated he hoped that the London programme would make bikes “as common as black cabs and red buses in the capital”. Easy to use with puncture-resistant tyres, muds guards and luggage racks the scheme quickly took off logging 1.5 million journeys in the first 3 months. Initially cyclists needed to be registered with TfL to hire bikes, however from December 2010 the scheme has opened up to allow those who have not registered to use the system too.

Kind of weird you guys did not even credit the designers for the design award. Shame on you. You go Bixi.

    Hello,

Yes it may seem weird. The reason we didn’t credit the designers is because it is the design of the scheme that won the award rather than the design of the bike. Hope that makes sense now.
