Furniture Award Winner 2011: Branca, Industrial Facility

Nominated for Designs of the Year Furniture Award 2011

Brit Insurance Furniture Award 2011: Branca, Industrial Facility, Sam Hecht, Kim Colin and Ippei Matsumoto, Italy.

The Branca chair, designed by Industrial Facility and manufactured by Italian brothers Mattiazzi was intended to look familiar to the eye. Mimicking the natural growth patterns of twigs and branches, the Branca backrest and armrests seem to grow seamlessly from just one piece of wood. Carved robotically with work overseen by expert craftsmen at the Mattiazzi factory in Italy, the Branca chair complies to all modern expectations, light enough to carry, easy enough to stack and transport.

I’m not really sure that the Branca is really bringing anything to design that Hans Wegner didn’t bring us over 50 years ago.

I wonder if it is comfortable to sit on? There is no comment about this though isn’t that first and foremost what a chair is all about? Secondly - does it allow someone to sit ergonomically correctly, thereby enhancing the posture - from a physiotherapist.

David, you should take a look at this video which shows the making of the Branca Chair and you’ll see a lot more of its uniqueness

Most of the time the real beauty of a product lies on its production. Great chair, and the video must be seen to understand why.
